Two sisters, Maria “Ardis” Soto #67 and Yesenia “Viviana” Palomares #68 attended AFLV 2019 Conference in Indianapolis in February 2019! This was a moving experience for both of them and allowed them to engage in multiple events. Here is a testimony from Maria “Ardis” Soto, Vice President of Entity Operations: ”Attending AFLV on behalf of the Upsilon Alpha Chapter and the Elmhurst College community, I was able to meet and experience so many new things. I was able to meet other Gammas from all over the nation, as well as meet some other people within the Purple Fam and FIRM Fam. It was great to see how all the Greek communities come together, not dependent upon their councils. I was able to engage in workshops that would help myself and my chapter bring great things to Greek Life. These workshops included how to fight the troublesome times of being multicultural and the racism that can occur anywhere. Another workshop helped to enhance our recruitment as a multicultural sorority and to know exactly how to target our audience to the best of our abilities. A large event that moved me completely was a huge, conference-wide discussion on the hardships of hazing in Greek Life. Hearing these stories of parents that had lost their children due to hazing made me realize just how often it happens and what we can do to help educate all Greek Life communities. Another event that helped to educate all of Greek Life was the strolling/step competition. This allowed for all Greek communities to know why organizations step or stroll and what it consists of. It gave an opportunity for us to learn about each other on a more deeper level to connect us together. Having this amazing opportunity to attend this conference wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of Elmhurst College and the Fraternity and Sorority Life on campus - not to mention Jake Tomlin for making it all possible for members of our Greek Life to all attend. I hope to keep in touch with the new friends that I have made and continue to strive to make Greek Life a better place. - Maria “Ardis” Soto #67, Vice President of Entity Operations”
