Two sisters, Maria “Ardis” Soto #67 and Yesenia “Viviana” Palomares #68 attended AFLV 2019 Conference in Indianapolis in February 2019! This was a moving experience for both of them and allowed them to engage in multiple events. Here is a testimony from Maria “Ardis” Soto, Vice President of Entity Operations: ”Attending AFLV on behalf of the Upsilon Alpha Chapter and the Elmhurst College community, I was able to meet and experience so many new things. I was able to meet other Gammas from all over the nation, as well as meet some other people within the Purple Fam and FIRM Fam. It was great to see how all the Greek communities come together, not dependent upon their councils. I was able to engage in workshops that would help myself and my chapter bring great things to Greek Life. These workshops included how to fight the troublesome times of being multicultural and the racism that can occur anywhere. Another workshop helped to enhance our recruitment as a multicultural sorority and to know exactly how to target our audience to the best of our abilities. A large event that moved me completely was a huge, conference-wide discussion on the hardships of hazing in Greek Life. Hearing these stories of parents that had lost their children due to hazing made me realize just how often it happens and what we can do to help educate all Greek Life communities. Another event that helped to educate all of Greek Life was the strolling/step competition. This allowed for all Greek communities to know why organizations step or stroll and what it consists of. It gave an opportunity for us to learn about each other on a more deeper level to connect us together. Having this amazing opportunity to attend this conference wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of Elmhurst College and the Fraternity and Sorority Life on campus - not to mention Jake Tomlin for making it all possible for members of our Greek Life to all attend. I hope to keep in touch with the new friends that I have made and continue to strive to make Greek Life a better place. - Maria “Ardis” Soto #67, Vice President of Entity Operations” SLG's National Convention this year was full of unity, empowerment, and history. Our delegates were excited to experience their first convention during their first year as Gammas! "The excitement only grew as we arrived at the hotel and saw SLG and SLB members proudly walking around wearing their letters. Meeting sisters from around the country was inspiring. Some gammas came from large chapters, while some were just starting out as a colonies. Convention is about seeing that it is not the size of the chapter that matters, but the passion and dedication carried by the individual members. Being at our national convention also highlighted the idea that we are all gammas and that is what brings us together, but we are also all women of balance with individual talents. Talents that we must empower each other with, because when we support each other incredible things can happen. Our alumnae are proof of this, gammas are mothers, scientists, law enforcers, educators, retailers, business leaders, and so much more! Seeing so many alumnae involved is a demonstration of how SLG is a real sisterhood for life. During our meetings, sisters stood up for issues that face our nation, families, friends, and our sisterhood. This convention proved that no voice is too small, and that as a united front we can make a difference in an unjust world. We get in life what we have the courage to ask for, and there is no one more courageous than a purple panther." - Paulina "Luceria" Victor #76 Head Delegate at SLG's National Convention 2018 for the Upsilon Alpha Chapter On Thursday, May 24, 2018, our alumna sister, Maria "Risuena" Barajas #45, graduated from the graduate nursing program at Elmhurst College!
On Saturday, May 26, 2018, we had 4 of our graduating seniors cross the stage to receive their diplomas from their varying undergraduate programs. Ixtel "Amaranta" Viramontes #58 Crystal "Xcaret" Magallon #64 Ambria "Inercia" Holman #65 Jessica "Valeria" Santana #66 We thank each one of you for your work to help our chapter grow and cannot wait to have your support as alumni! We wish you all the best of luck in the next chapter in your life and in your future endeavors. This Spring the YA gammas made blankets for cancer patients with the support from our sister Kuki! We got a lot out of this event as it reminded us to be humble and count our blessings, along with supporting our philanthropy of Breast Cancer. We used this time to bond as a sisterhood and provide motivation to others. In addition to this a group of gammas rounded up at the Alden Gardens Nursing Home in Bloomingdale. We hosted a fun game of bingo for the patients, and provided fun prizes to bring out their competitive sides! Starting with our founding day of April 9th, the Upsilon Alpha gammas at Elmhurst College hosted Gamma Week. We had an ice cream social were everyone on campus had the chance of coming out to socialize with the chapter! The gammas hosted a competitive game night filled with SLG facts along with that of other greek organizations on campus. In addition to this, we also sparked our creative sides with some canvas painting! As midterms were completed and finals approached, the ladies of SLG also hosted study tips outside in support of our academic values! February 28, the Upsilon Alpha Chapter packaged food with Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg, IL! With the other volunteers, we packaged enough food for 75 children to have three meals a day for one year! It was a great experience as a chapter - we bonded, we got our mind off of school, all while devoting our time for a probable cause. It was a great day to change someone's life! During the 2018 spring semester our gammas hosted a number of events during our Women's Empowerment Week in the month of March! We had a week full of activities driven with the purpose of raising support for women on campus and in the Elmhurst community. We held a fun women's history competition, made motivating vision boards, and made a banner filled with inspirational quotes aimed to raise everyone's confidence levels. We were blessed to have our Alum Eiliana Silva come out to give an inspirational talk regarding heart health. She taught us the importance of maintaining low stress levels and the importance of reaching out for support in times of need. We had a great recruitment week filled with laughter, stories, and new connections! We emphasized each of our principles with a week full of events that were aimed to represent each! Day 1: Informationals Day 2: Community Service - Goodie bag making for Concord Retirement Home Day 3: Cultural Awareness - Cultural Kahoot! Day 4: Morals and Ethics - Movie time! Day 5: La Ceremonia! On February 17, two of our lovely sisters, Ambria Holman and Maria Soto, became Adult First Aid/CPR/AED certified! CPR Certification Facts:
